Don't Be Afraid ... You Will Feel No Pain

What is IV Sleep Sedation Dentistry?

The anesthesia is injected into the arm

Most people dislike going to the dentist, as they are afraid ... of pain. They also dislike being restricted to a chair for a lengthy bit of time, and people don't like being out of control. Others have an easily triggered gag reflex.

IV sleep sedation is a form of conscious sedation administered through an intravenous line, helping patients enter a deeply relaxed state while remaining aware enough to respond to basic cues. Unlike general anesthesia, IV sedation does not make you fully unconscious, but it does help ease anxiety, making the experience feel quick and comfortable.

There are few dentists in the area who offer sleep sedation which sets our practice apart from the crowd.

This sedation option is particularly beneficial for patients who:

  • Experience moderate to severe dental anxiety

  • Have a fear of going to the dentist

  • Are undergoing longer or more complex procedures, like oral surgery

  • Have a low pain threshold or a sensitive gag reflex

  • Prefer a more relaxed dental experience

Dr. Derek Carson

IV sleep sedation dentistry does not require a hospital-type anesthesiologist, but it does require extensive training and licensing by the State of California Board of Dental Examiners. Dr. Derek Carson has been administrating sleep sedation since 2005). Thus, we are able to provide you with a safe and relaxing alternative to being awake during your procedure. Derek also is a Dental Sedation Evaluator for the State of California.

Benefits of IV Sleep Sedation Dentistry

  • Deep Relaxation and Comfort
With IV sedation, patients enter a state of deep relaxation, minimizing anxiety and allowing for a more comfortable experience.

  • Fast-Acting and Adjustable
IV sedation begins to work almost immediately, and our team can easily adjust the dosage during the procedure to keep you at the optimal level of sedation.

  • Reduced Memory of the Procedure
Many patients report little to no memory of the procedure afterward, which can be helpful for those who feel nervous about the sights, sounds, and sensations associated with dental work.

  • Safe and Monitored by Professionals
Administered by qualified professionals, IV sedation is a safe option for those seeking a calm and comfortable dental experience. Throughout the procedure, we closely monitor vital signs to ensure a safe and effective sedation experience.

  • Convenient for Multiple Treatments
With sedation, it’s often possible to complete multiple procedures in one appointment, reducing the need for multiple visits and helping you achieve a healthier smile sooner.

What to Expect with IV Sedation

Pre-Appointment Consultation

We’ll start with a thorough consultation to review your medical history, discuss your dental needs, and determine if IV sedation is right for you. We take time to answer questions and ensure you feel fully informed about the sedation process.

Preparation for Your Appointment

For your safety, it’s important to follow any pre-appointment instructions we provide, such as avoiding food and drink for a specified period before your procedure. Having someone available to drive you home afterward is also essential, and required, as the effects of sedation may linger. Unfortunately, the law does not allow patients to use Uber or Lyft after sleep sedation therapy.

Relaxed Sedation Experience

On the day of your procedure, we’ll place a small IV in your arm, through which the sedation medication is administered. Our team carefully monitors you to maintain a safe and comfortable sedation level throughout the procedure. Within minutes, you’ll begin to feel deeply relaxed. With sedation therapy, you are still awake, but in an altered state of consciousness.  You won't feel any pain or even know what is going on. However, if the dentist asks you questions you can reply by blinking or hand motions. When the procedure is over, the first question you will ask is: "When are you beginning?"

Post-Sedation Recovery

After your treatment, you’ll spend some time recovering before going home. Many patients feel drowsy but relaxed as the sedation gradually wears off, and you’ll be able to return to normal activities the following day.
